Winter HAF 2022

10th Jan 2023Dr Jennie Cockroft

Following a very successful Summer 2022 programme we have just completed an extremely busy and rewarding Winter HAF week!

This time our provision has included delivering nutrition education training sessions, both in-person and online, to HAF Providers across several counties in the UK. We sent out over 9,000 individual learning resources tailored for younger children and parents, teenagers and parents and SEND specific information leaflets for children and parents across Cumbria.

We also supplied nutrition education resources to HAF Providers across Cumbria, Sandwell and Nottingham. These resources included our fabulous new Food & Health Activity Book (stuffed full of inspirational fun activities, and recipe ideas around food and health), a giant Eatwell Guide Floor Mat and sets of food photocards.

We also of course need to mention our incredible teams of nutritionists and nutrition students, who ran over 50 face-to-face nutrition education workshops at HAF Provider camps across Wiltshire, South Gloucestershire, Durham and Bath & North East Somerset. The theme was based around our ‘Strive for 5!’ healthy eating message and our teams, together with the children, prepared a healthy tomato and lentil soup and every child also made a spectacular fruity Christmas tree to take home. In total over 2,000 fruity Christmas tree creations were made over 4 days!

The children thoroughly enjoyed the activities and below is just some of the feedback we have received from both Providers and parents:

“The children really engaged in the fruit Christmas tree creative task and enjoyed eating the fruit, whilst creating their trees. The fruit selection offered plenty of variety for children to try and access.”

“my son came home and said how he wanted to start eating healthy because it was important for his football and play. I jumped on the chance when he said could we buy oranges and grapes, food he would normally never want to try or have”.

“The children were engaged from start to finish and really enjoyed getting a hands-on experience”

“From the childrens POV the structure and variety of activities was the best thing. From our staff point of view the best thing was being able to learn something we can now take out to other settings”

“One child said making the food rainbow was their favourite part of the entire week in our end of camp questionnaire”

What a fantastic Winter HAF! … and now to get planning for Easter 2023!
