Windmill Primary was fortunate to be asked to be part of the pilot group of schools to receive the Phunky Foods package of learning materials.
A member of the school support staff, Mrs. Tracy Smith, attended a number of training sessions, looking at lesson plans and discussing the best ways to deliver the scheme in the classroom.
She also found it useful to take part in group tasks designed to support the delivery of the physical element of the programme.

The school received a number of quality learning resources to support the Phunky Foods project, and also took delivery of a blender and food mixer for use in the classroom.
Mrs. Smith is very happy to deliver the programme as part of the cover she provides to allow teachers to take planning, preparation and assessment time.
The learning materials are detailed and easy to follow.

Children look forward to the session and are enthusiastic about their learning, and the whole programme fully supports the Healthy School agenda.
We are extremely pleased to be part of this very successful project.

It is wonderful to say Yes to Success and implement an initiative that really works successfully. I think that Phunky Foods should have a place in every school.

Hi Christine,
Just to let you know what we are up to in school.
I cascaded information and resources to full staff meeting.
We are running a Phunky Foods Club on Saturday mornings in school.
We are also starting an after school club - phunky foods.
Lesson Plans have been handed to Science team and whole staff along with Physical activity lessons - year 5 are using these now. We are also planning to support Parents using Phunky Foods resources - this is an area that is crucial in developing healthy life styles for our pupils.

Hi Christine.
The training was very inspiring! Jenny is obviously passionate about the need for this in our schools, which i fully agree with. The practical bits- like making smoothies and the quiz examples were good to look at, as it gave ideas of how to implement it! The course was inspirational and fun!... And the lunches weren't bad either!!! We are starting the programme after half term as an after school activity, so i shall keep you posted on how it's going!
See you at the end of March. I presume there will be info on times nearer the time.

Hello Christine
Just a little update. I have changed my timing for the sessions. Lunchtimes were not working very well. The childrens attendance for the sessions were not consistent so trying to deliver over two lunch breaks was difficult. If they were enjoying their lunch breaks they often did not want to come in, especially the boys. Therefore I have rearranged to make an after school club for the healthy eating programme. So far attendance of the original nine has been much better and another boy has approached me to join (fingers crossed).
We are sampling bread this week!!!! I am also going to introduce the varieties in a taster session at breakfast club.
Physical activity - Wednesday after school
Healthy eating - Thursday after school
Bye for now

At Birkby Infants and Nursery School we are committed to supporting the well- being of all our children, their families and all our staff and colleagues. Through implementing the Phunky Foods programme we hope to impact positively on children's attitudes towards adopting a healthy lifestyle whilst extending and enriching their knowledge.
Initially the PE Coordinator and myself identified children who fulfilled either or both of the following criteria:-
These two criteria are to be the focus of our extra-curricular activities for Sports and PE during this academic year. The children are from all 3 year groups i.e. - 3 from Reception, 4 from Year 1 and 5 from Year 2 - 12 in total. We currently meet once a week for an hour. This consists of 1/2 an hour of Physical Activity at lunchtime followed by 1/2 an hour of classroom activity (lesson plans).
As our children are from mixed age groups the activities are highly differentiated through support, expectation and outcome and whilst taken from the Phunky Food Website are tailored to meet our childrens needs. They currently enjoy any concrete, hands on activities where they can try, test and explore for themselves.
We recently encouraged the children to explore and examine each part of several fruits and compare their skin, seeds and flesh (using magnifiers and a summary chart). As an extension to this activity we used our 'labratory fruit' to make fruity cocktails. Each child had previously decorated a plastic cup with collage materials. To this they added a rim of low sugar via dipping their glass into lemon juice.
Each child then used a cocktail shaker and mixed their chosen juice with slices of fruit. This they found totally absorbing and were engaged throughout their work.
The rest of the group sang as each child used the cocktail shaker - making up songs about the fruit in the shaker - they were brilliant. -"Shake your apple, shake your grapes, shake together until your arm aches. Drink your drink, drink it all, then you will grow very tall."
They continue to request further cocktail activities.
The course was eviedently very good and Emma is busy looking at ways we can use the scheme in our work in school.
Best wishes

Hi Christine
We (our PE Coordinator & i) have started our programme for two identified groups (Year 1 and Year 2). Operating from 11.30am to 12.30pm two days a week. We shall evaluate the logistics of this at Christmas as we may choose to run as an after school activity. Those parents i have approached (our target group) have been pleased that we are supporting their children's health and development. I will post a sample of our lesson evaluations, parents comments and some photographs. Thanks for all your support

Dear Christine,
Our Phunky Foods Co- coordinator asked me to email you with confirmation of the date of our Phunky Foods day and a brief outline of activities.
We are holding our Phunky Foods Day on Wednesday 15th February and hosting the KS2 class from a neighbouring school, who are going on an outdoor pursuits visit with us in April. It also covers my part- time teachers PPA time. Much of the day is based around the KS2 Balance of Good Health materials; looking at sorting foods, including those from a food diary kept this week, data handling, making pizzas to include all food groups and to try to get them in proportion. We are also carrying out a science investigation around keeping food warm ( it will Link to KS2 SATs)and doing some PE in the local village hall (where we usually go).
We have invited the local press to come along, we thought it would be good publicity for us and for you. If you could come for part of the day at least it would be great. We will start the day at 9.30 and finish at 3.00 to give the children from the neighbouring school chance to get here and back again.
Best wishes, Maureen Skinner Headteacher
We implemented the Phunky Food programme first thing this morning and the kids loved it. We are using it as part PPA time for 30 minutes a week for classes 1 - 5 .

Looking forward to seeing the new revamped website and I am sure that it will make downloads quicker. I am still delivering the healthy eating programme to the year ½ class as a part PPA solution.
The children are still very enthusiastic and the sessions always result in lots of questions and opinions from the children. From their reactions I believe that they are beginning to understand and form an opinion on healthy eating issues. The children always enjoy the activities and they have fit in nicely with science and DT units even though I have had to amend some activities to avoid duplication.

We are currently using Phunky Foods with our Keystage 1 children on a weekly basis, this is going to be our ideal ppa solution for all the school next year. It is a wonderful opportunity for us. Today we're having a Phunky Foods Day and have invited Ampleforth C. of E. school to join us for this day before our joint school trip to Bewerley Park so children can get together.

Year four teacher thought resources and pistures available were fantastic and linked to previous science work brilliantly.
Quote' there are some fantastic resources with clear guidelines on how to use them'
Learning Mentor who has been using website as a resource to work with parents in the foundation stage on healthier lifestyles.
'I have used many of the current events articles from newspapers available through the website as discussion topics for me parents group. I have found them really useful'
Teachers using balance of good health food sorting activity. Children found this great fun as thought provoking. Lead to discussion about own diets and how much of their diet was in the 'wrong' section and how to address the imbalance. Loving crisps has put them in a dilemma!

Hello Christine,
The years 1 and 2 children involved with the Phunky Foods nutrition programme are really enjoying it. Every week they are eager and enthusiastic. They especially enjoy the practical activities such as food sort, the games and the experiments. The experiment to demonstrate that air comes from the lungs, using a bottle of water and a straw caused quite a stir.
The children have been able to use the information they have learned in other areas of the curriculum such as science and DT. The resources provided are excellent and the lesson plans and resouces lists are easy to follow.
I look forward to seeing the new improved web site.

Planet Food was delivered as a weekly lunchtime club to a mixed age group of children for 5 weeks. The children thoroughly enjoyed making their own books about the Planets and where all our food came from on earth. When the different children of the Planet Food were introduced, the older kids loved using an atlas to find facts about the countries while the younger ones enjoyed colouring the National costumes and finding out about the different foods different children enjoy.
Their work now forms a Planet Food display in the classroom.
