Welcome to PhunkyFoods

PhunkyFoods logoPurely Nutrition’s very own healthy eating and physical activity programme for primary school children. As health professionals at Purely Nutrition we encourage healthy eating in childhood because we believe that children will benefit both from the formation of good eating habits early on in life, which subsequently track into adulthood, and because of the beneficial long-term health consequences of consuming a healthy diet during the childhood years.

Amongst the under 11’s in the UK the prevalence of obesity has risen alarmingly from 9.9% in 1995 to 13.7% in 2003, and the percentage of children who are in the overweight or obese category now stands at 27.7%. Research evidence also suggests that young people eat less than half the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, and 20% eat no fruit at all in an average week. In addition, 58% of 7-10 year-olds are largely inactive, spending less than an hour per day participating in activity of moderate intensity.

Concern over this terrifying picture of the state of our children’s diets, coupled with the alarming predictions for the impact on their future health, is currently at the forefront of the public health agenda. A nation-wide target to halt the year-on-year increase in obesity among children under the age of 11-years, by 2010, is at the heart of current public health strategies. In order to reverse the current negative trend in the UK it is essential that we develop successful strategies for improving the diets of children.

Here at Purely Nutrition we believe that PhunkyFoods is one such strategy and a great starting point for teaching our children about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, based on balance and enjoyment of food and physical activity.
