PhunkyFoods goes top of the class

Harrogate-based Purely Nutrition has been awarded a coveted Big Tick award in the Business in The Community Awards 2009 for its ground-breaking healthy lifestyles programme for primary schools. The awards recognise and celebrate those companies which have shown innovation, creativity and a sustained commitment to corporate responsibility.

The PhunkyFoods programme, which is now running in 550 primary schools across the UK, teaches children about healthy eating and the benefits of physical activity through fun activities including drama, music, crafts and games.

Purely Nutrition has been presented with the Power in Partnership Award in the Community Impact category, which is awarded to groups of two or more companies that through collaborative action are having a positive impact on their community. Entries are judged by a panel of independent business representatives and experts. In addition to winning a Big Tick award the entry was deemed so strong it has also been short-listed for the overall national Example of Excellence.

The PhunkyFoods programme, which is subsidised by a food industry consortium (Northern Foods, Nestle and Cargill), was set up in response to the 2004 Government White Paper, "Choosing Health" which states that the obesity epidemic is the shared responsibility of food industry, government, parents and schools. The programme aims to engage with schools, creating a scheme that is both affordable within the education sector, and yet profitable to run. The programme helps schools to achieve National Healthy Schools Status (NHSS) and research has found that the results, in terms of the impact on children and their lifestyle, are staggering.

Sorrell Fearnell, managing director of Purely Nutrition, said: "We're delighted that the work we're doing has been recognised. We passionately believe in what we do, and we wanted to create a programme which worked well as a business whilst still being of benefit to the wider community. Looking after the health and wellbeing of our children should be at the forefront of everything we do as a nation."

Stephen Howard, chief executive of Business in the Community said: "I congratulate all the winners of a Big Tick this year. In the current economic climate it is fantastic to see so many strong examples of businesses that recognise the benefits, both social, environmental and to their bottom line, of being a responsible business."
