PhunkyFoods launch qualification to educate teachers on how to teach children the benefits of healthy eating

Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, recently branded the Government's Obesity Strategy - to get all 11-14 cooking healthy versions of classics, as an "expensive gimmick." He believes that children can get their information about healthy eating from different sources like parents and magazines, but PhunkyFoods, a company which provides a healthy eating and physical activity programme for school children, couldn't disagree more.

PhunkyFoods, which operates in 300 schools across the country, has just launched a new City and Guilds Level 2 qualification aimed at teachers and classroom assistants, which will help them to educate children in the benefits of nutrition and healthy eating. The qualification will enable adults working with school-aged children to improve their knowledge and awareness of healthy eating messages, in-line with current government recommendations.
Dr Jennie Cockroft RPHNutr, Nutritional Director at PhunkyFoods comments: "The new course will educate teachers on how to teach children a wide range of healthy eating and nutritional topics including; good food sources, diet related disorders, key healthy eating recommendations and the School Food Trusts food based standards.
"There are lots of ways of to teach children the benefits of healthy eating and nutrition, but it is just as important that the teachers educating them have a good understanding themselves."
Funding for the course can be accessed through the Learning and Skills Council's Train 2 Gain service. Further details can be found on the Train 2 Gain website (www.traintogain.gov.uk)
PhunkyFoods provides schools with a full training programme, including lesson plans and supporting resource boxes containing books, DVD's and games. PhunkyFoods is available to every primary school year group building into a full six year programme of work. Further details are available on the PhunkyFoods website (www.phunkyfoods.co.uk).
